Those were the most powerful teams I ever played in City of Heroes. Then once you got the team rolling and you got all those sweet, sweet buffs, debuffs, heals, and controls going against the mobs, the packs of +5 purple enemies would start melting like butter. I did enjoy the PvE experience, and some of the most fun I've had in that game was blowing newer players minds by running 8-player Defender, Defender/Controller, or Defender/Blaster teams in PvE.Ī lot of players would come in thinking the team would be doomed to failure because "defenders are weak", "we need tanks and scrappers". Also, maybe others had a different experience, but I never felt like the PvP portions of the game was particularly good or well balanced. I feel like NCSoft kind of ruined it when they took over from Cryptic. Seeing Statesman in a new game reminded me of just how much.Ĭity of Heroes started as a pretty good game. In the case of MxM fans, they can say goodbye to the game that they tried to prop up with actual cash unless NCSoft announces future plans to open up code for private-server use, the game will be completely toast at the end of January.Īs game publishers continue to experiment with payment models on retail and free-to-play titles alike, they may find users fed up with games whose MTX expire after years, let alone months. The game will probably be better remembered as a crash-and-burn example of what happens when companies expect players to dump money into their microtransaction (MTX) economies. Otherwise, it played largely like other popular MOBA games with few differentiating factors. MxM's full cast included "all-star" characters from NCSoft's gaming catalog, but it also confusingly launched with a bunch of brand-new characters. MxM launched on June 21 as another entry in the MOBA genre (which you may know via games like Dota 2 and League of Legends), along with a few single-player "PvE" modes that range from repetitive, Diablo-like slogs to quick-and-dirty mini-games.
